Camp Blankets

The layer that lives in the rig permanently. Packable down-alternative camping blankets and convertible camp wraps: warmth at the fire, extra loft over the bag at 2 a.m., emergency layer when someone underestimated the elevation. An outdoor blanket that wears as a poncho, pegs down as a ground layer, and buckles into an emergency sleeping bag.

Water-repellent, quick-drying, and small enough that they never get left behind.

Packable down-alternative camping blankets that do three jobs: wear one as a poncho around the fire, peg it down as a ground layer, or throw it over your sleeping bag for extra loft on a colder night than you packed for.

Fill power is quality and fill weight is quantity, and you need both numbers to compare. Our camp blanket guide puts all three side by side on fill, weight and packed size.

Water-repellent and quick-drying, which is what separates a camp blanket from the fleece throw in your living room. Sleeping cold? See the sleeping bags and liners.

Down Alternative Fill, and Why That Is Not a Compromise

Real down loses almost all its warmth when it gets wet, and it takes a long time to come back. That is fine in a dry tent. It is not fine on a blanket that spends its life draped over a camp chair, dropped on the ground, and shoved back in a door pocket damp.

Our XL and L blankets use 305 g of KingLoft down alternative at 620 fill power. You get the loft and the compressibility people buy down for, without the failure mode. The fill is also hypoallergenic, which matters if anyone in the vehicle reacts to feathers.

If you want a genuinely insulated blanket that survives real use rather than one you have to baby, this is the trade worth making.

      Water-Repellent, Not Waterproof

Plenty of brands sell an outdoor blanket as waterproof. Ours are water-repellent, and the difference is worth understanding before you buy.

A water-repellent treatment on 20D ripstop makes the surface shed damp grass, spilled coffee and light rain. Water beads and rolls off rather than soaking in, and the fabric dries fast when it does wet out.

What it will not do is keep you dry sitting in a downpour. A truly waterproof blanket needs a sealed membrane or a coated backing, and that means a heavier, stiffer, noisier blanket that does not pack down.

Straight answer: these handle wet ground, drizzle and spills, and they dry quickly afterwards. They are not a rain shelter. We would rather you knew that than found out.

An Outdoor Blanket That Earns Its Space in the Rig

A blanket that does one thing gets left at home. These do four:

      • Wearable. Snap closures turn the blanket into a poncho or cape, so you can stand up, tend the fire and carry a drink without dropping your warmth on the floor. This is the single most used feature on any camp blanket.
      • Ground layer. The SMART 150 has reinforced loops at all four corners, so it pegs down as a picnic layer, a gear tarp or a sun shield.
      • Emergency sleeping bag. Buckle the SMART 150 closed and it becomes a wrap you can sleep in. That is the layer you want when the temperature drops further than the forecast said.
      • Extra loft over the bag. Thrown over a sleeping bag at 2 a.m., an insulated blanket buys you several degrees without buying a colder-rated bag.

Add the obvious fifth use and it explains why these sell: warmth in a camp chair at dusk, which is where most people spend the coldest hours of a trip fully awake.

Which Camp Blanket Should You Take?

      If you want... Take
Enough blanket for two adults Multi-Purpose Camp Blanket, XL
The same warmth for one person Multi-Purpose Camp Blanket, L
Something that converts and pegs down BLANKET SMART 150 Convertible
Maximum warmth for the packed size Either Multi-Purpose, 620 fill power
One to leave in the truck year-round Any of the three, all pack small

Full dimensions, weights and packed sizes are on each product page.

Is a Camping Blanket Worth It?

Yes, if you sit outside after dark, you camp in shoulder season, you take passengers who feel the cold differently than you do, or you have ever ended an evening early because someone got cold.

No, if you are looking for a wool blanket, a heated blanket, or a fully waterproof picnic mat. None of those is what this range is. These are packable insulated blankets, and they earn their place by being small enough that you never decide to leave one behind. See the rest of our camping gear for the rest of the setup.

      Camp Blanket FAQ

What is a camping blanket for?

Warmth outside the tent. It covers the hours you spend awake in the cold: sitting by the fire, standing around at dusk, early mornings before the sun clears the ridge. Inside the tent it adds loft over your sleeping bag.

How cold are these rated for?

KingCamp does not publish a temperature rating for them, and we are not going to invent one. Judge them by fill: 620 fill power with 305 g of down alternative in the Multi-Purpose, 150 g shaped cotton fill in the SMART 150. Both are layering pieces, not a substitute for a rated sleeping bag.

      Are these blankets waterproof?

No. They are water-repellent, which means the surface sheds damp grass, spills and light rain, and dries fast. It does not mean you stay dry sitting in a downpour. Waterproof needs a sealed backing, and that would make the blanket heavier, stiffer and far less packable.

Is down alternative worse than real down?

Not for this job. Down loses most of its warmth when wet and is slow to recover. A camp blanket lives outdoors, on the ground, in the vehicle, and it gets damp. Down alternative keeps working when it does, and it is hypoallergenic.

Can you wear a camp blanket?

Yes. Snap closures turn these into a poncho or cape, so you can move around, tend the fire and keep both hands free without dropping your warmth. It is the feature most people end up using the most.

Can it be used as a picnic or ground blanket?

The SMART 150 can. It has reinforced loops at all four corners, so it pegs down as a ground layer, a gear cover or a sun shield. The Multi-Purpose blankets are built for warmth rather than ground use, though the repellent finish handles damp grass fine.

      How small do they pack?

Small enough that leaving one behind is never the sensible choice. The XL packs to roughly the size of a large water bottle and weighs just over a pound. Each blanket ships with its own storage bag. Exact packed dimensions are on the product pages.

Do you sell wool or heated camp blankets?

Not in this range. These are synthetic insulated blankets, chosen because they pack smaller than wool and dry faster than either. If you are after heat you can plug in, our heated sleeping bag and heated liner are in the sleeping bags category.
